The social and political process that a significant part of Catalan society is engaged in is so dense, complex and fast-paced that it is difficult to clearly appreciate the factors that explain its origins some ten years ago and its current state of development. According to opinion polls conducted at the end of 2013,60 percent of the population held a desire to have an independent state (double the number than at the beginning of the process), a phenomenon which is still on the rise. Nevertheless, a huge number of political uncertainties remain. At present no one can reasonably predict the probable future evolution and eventual outcome of this impressive democratic challenge to twenty-first century Europe. Not until the process comes to an end will it be possible to fully, precisely and rigorously examine all the factors involved in this phenomenon, which is s politically exciting as it is unprecedented.

It is extremely interesting to observe how critiques of economic and political crises usually have a moral dimension, while periods of stability, growth, abundance and calm tend to produce debates with an amoral basis. This has also been the case during the recent financial recession, which has uncovered a social, economic and political crisis of deeper, more serious dimensions. Is has affected the very model upon which the social and economic progress of recent years has been based. When it comes to finding the causes of the current crisis, rampant greed and damaging the rules of the game have been seen from the start as the main triggers. In Barach Obama's solemn inaugural speech as President of the United States of America on the 20th January 2009, he saw weaknesses in the country's economy as due to a 'consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age'. In other words the recession is not only consequence of the greed of a few, but also the moral weakness the majority. The American president's diagnosis is common among the leaders of those nations that have found themselves affected by this same wave of recession, with the subsequent unmasking of irresponsible behaviour, similar to that found in the US financial system. There then follows the condemnation of a supposed collective participation in a growth that is clearly founded on human greed.

The role of immigration on the crafting of Catalan national identity has, in general terms, been underestimated. Despite the arrival of as many as three million immigrants into Catalan society during the course of the twentieth century, this phenomenon and its contribution to the reinforcement
and survival of Catalan cultural uniqueness has not been recognized. This article argues that without immigration, Catalonia would potentially have suffered economic decadence, cultural irrelevance and political non-existence. The author seeks to construct a theoretical model of analysis of
the immigrant's status dilution and the benefits of transforming immigration in a 'place of memory' for the Catalan national identity.
; This study analyses generic processes affecting the various tiers of the daily press in relation to the evolution of the political structuring of the Catalanspeaking areas (Catalonia, Balearic Islands and Valencian Community) within the Spanish State, from the beginning of the transition to democracy in 1976 through to 1996. The major movements to be detected in press diffusion are the increase in the "vertebration" of the Spanish state as a whole, evident as much in the increased weight of the centralised statewide press penetrating the Catalanspeaking market as in the process of homogenisation revealed by key data referring to total sales, circulation density and market shares.
